Untold Tales #208.1 - Untold Epilogues of the Tenth Caphan: Part Sixeen and 1/2 - No Such Thing As Too Much Anime

"I apologize," Liu Xi Xian spoke to the Manga Shoggoth in barely above a whisper.

The Shoggoth looked at her, and then around to see if Ebony was nearby. He assumed his High Preistess put the Chinese teen up to this, but Ebony was nowhere to be found. Perhaps Liu Xi was indeed becoming more mature. 'For what?' he asked her.

"I reacted in anger upon news of your death," Liu Xi replied. "and when I suggested death for Vaahir."

'And you feel terrible because I have taught you never to lose control,' the Shoggoth finished.

    She nodded slowly.

'As you can see, I am still alive,' the Shoggoth pointed out. 'Everyone is safe. Kaara is happy. And I am proud that you kept Ebony safe.'

"You don't understand," Liu Xi explained. "I am apologizing...because everything has worked out...and I am still angry. And--" she shook her head slightly. "--I...am confused, or frightened. I'm not sure."

'You were exposed to one of the Fairly Great Old Ones. It will have an effect on you for some time, until your mortal mind chooses to sort it out or forget.'

"No," Liu Xi shook her head again. "I feel...anxious. It didn't just touch my mind. I feel...something was left."

The Shoggoth pondered that for a moment before realizing that the poor teen was just having difficulty putting what she felt into words. He decided to try another approach. 'Show me,' he suggested.

Just as Ebony approached, an inky darkness washed over the area, accompanied by unfathomable cold, feeling chillier to the soul than the depths of space itself. The cold was vast yet oppressive, suffocating, sucking the breath out of her lungs. "What the...?" she exclaimed.

And then it was gone, and left was Liu Xi and the Shoggoth.

'I see,' the Shoggoth thought. 'It assaulted your mind as well as your body,' he explained. 'You were fortunate to have survived with your sanity intact.'

"Not fortunate," Liu Xi reminded him. "I have become used to it...and it frightens me."

'Indeed.' He turned his attention to Ebony. 'You have trained her well.'

    "Thank you." Ebony nodded.

'The darkness in your mind, Liu Xi, will never subside,' the Shoggoth told her. 'But do not suppress it. Embrace it and let it make you stronger...so a similar attack in the future will be easier for you to bear.'

She nodded slowly, and nearly left the area. But then she smiled slightly and added, "Your decision on what to do with Vaahir...I know you sometimes have doubts when you make decisions involving mortals."

The Shoggoth remained silent, waiting for her to continue. Or possibly scold him as she did occasionally.

"It was fair," Liu Xi told him. She smiled again and added, "You might feel yourself distant from humans and their feelings...but you understand them well."

'Feelings are a simple electrochemical reaction--' The Shoggoth stopped himself when Ebony frowned. 'Yes. Thank you.'

"Here." Liu Xi produced a wrapped box she had been holding at her waist since she began speaking to him. "The paper is flavored. I know you like eating the wrapping, so I decided to make it interesting."

The Shoggoth immediately complied, sucking the wrapping paper gently from the box. Inside were full box sets of Noir and Full Metal Alchemist. He turned his attention to Ebony, who smiled and shrugged.

"Humans like an occasional distraction to forget about real life," Liu Xi said. "This is in case you might too."

Rather than explain once again just how many plains of thought he could follow at once to Liu Xi, he simply said, 'Thank you, this will prove an excellent diversion.'

"I will watch with you if you promise to play the DVD's in order this time," Liu Xi offered. "Sadly Ebony says she has to return to Lemuria to clean up."

'Will you make popcorn?' the Manga Shoggoth asked. 'I find it has an interesting texture.'

    "Yes." Liu Xi laughed.

'I find that arrangement agreeable,' Shoggoth conceded as he made his way toward his anime watching chamber with Liu Xi right behind him.
