Semi-Tranparent Lad # 12: Preparing for the Storm

--------------------------

The Streets of Goth Haven
Thursday Morning, 9ish.
C-Class is fighting a Sentinoid. They are losing.

"Crap." was the word that running over & over in Ben Hermes', Semi-Transparent Lad's, head. Neither him or his teammates were ready for this. Another thought was "Why did Mr. Summers put them up to this?"

“Everybody! Defense Formation 14-82-Alpha!” Betty Marsh, Teen Avenger & unofficial field leader, called out.

"Which one was that again?" James Milton, Billy Goat, yelled out as narrowly avoided being stepped on.

Before Betty could reply, The twenty foot tall automaton says roboticly: "Attention! You are in direct violation of Senate Resolution 1066 for possession of unregistered meta-human abilities. You are commanded to surrender & come with me to an official registration site for processing. If you do not comply, you will be deemed hostile & targeted for summary termination."

"Shut up!" James replied. The Sentinoid must of heard him because it then shot at him.

"I guess we've been deemed hostile?" Oswald Vanderhoosey, The Human Zamboni, said trying to avoid the blasts.

"I guess so." James said as the group went into what was somewhere between Defense Formation 14-82-Alpha & Defense Formation 16-24-Beta-Gamma.

This did not stop the automaton but it did slow down a bit. But, it was still not enough. Minutes later: the killing machine had cornered the group down an alleyway with no apparent way of escape. Some of the team started to panic.

--------------------------

"Time!" Betty called out. The Sentinoid stopped moving & shut down in mid motion. The landscape disappeared to reveal one of the many huge domed off nickel-titanium plated Hologramatic Training Centers within the Parrodipolis office of the Federal Meta-Human Resource Center.

Up about seven or eight feet, in the control room was Mr. G. Matthew Summers, the group's Trainer. He had been monitoring the whole exercise. He then came over the intercom: "That was good, but we still need to work on a few things. Come up to the control room & we'll talk."

The group scrambled away from the sleeping giant, walked over to the elevator & a short ride later were in the control with Mr. Summers to review the tape of their performance. C-Class was going to be on a field trip to The Safe that day but their request to tour the facility was denied at the last minute. The reason given: The Safe was updated some of it's "security measures". So, as a Plan B: they were doing some training.

They all sat down on the futuristic looking metallic chairs as Mr. Summers played back the session on the flat plasma screens. Every member had their own screen that showed their movements during the session.

"I can say this: every time we train were getting better." Mr. Summers says trying to may them feel better.

"But, it's not enough." James said sarcastically.

"Yes. I set up this simulation to test your limits. I put it in Goth Haven where most of you have no reference points & against a Sentinoid because I know that it is slightly above your range."

"Thanks." James said. Again, sarcastically. Betty hit him on the shoulder. "Ow!" James said as he rubbed his shoulder.

"But, I feel that we should be good for a fight with an actual non-FMRC controled Sentinoid in a few weeks."

There was blank stairs from the whole group. Some mouths' dropped open.

"That is if that should ever occur. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but I'm not saying it won't." Mr. Summers says with an uneven laugh.

There were sighs of relief all around. Then, Mr. Summers pressed a button on one of the many control panels. Then, the Sentinoid down on the training room floor turned on & walked off to it's storage area.

"Another thing we need to work on is knowing our Defense Measures. One high point: Team work is working pretty well. Also..." Mr. Summers said, before he could continue he was interrupted by the entering Alison Brandiwyne & the members of B Class.

"What are you doing here?" Miss Brandiwyne asked. She was slightly shocked to see anyone there, especially C Class.

"Training." Mr. Summers said pointedly. He & Miss Brandiwyne don't get on real well.

"I thought you had your little field trip thing to go on." She shot back.

"We did, but it was rescheduled for a later date."

As the Trainer's "talked", Ben couldn't help notice that there was something wrong with B Class. They were just standing there, not doing anything. They had a blank look on their faces, the lights might have been on but no one was home. That sort of freaked Ben out given his past experiences with B Class.

"Well. We have this time reserved for training, we always do. So, please leave." Miss Brandiwyne said.

"Uh... No." Mr. Summers said. Some members of C Class laughed. Member of B Class might of laughed if they all didn't seem brain dead.

"What?" Miss Brandiwyne said astonished.

"I signed up for this time. So, you leave."

"But, B Class has always had a 9 am training session."

Mr. Summers looks at his watch. "It's 9:45."

"Well, we're late because... because..." Miss Brandiwyne was searching for answer. Mr. Summer knew where she was but he thinks that she might be trying to keep him in the dark. It wasn't going to work: He gets all the same memo's she does.

"Mr. Garrick had something for us to do." She said quiet full of herself.

"Mr. Garrick always has something for you to do." Mr. Summers shot back with a knowing look on his face.

"So? It shouldn't matter that were late, we still have the time reserved."

"No. You don't."

"Yes. We do!" Miss Brandiwyne said, getting flustered. She never understood why Mr. Garrick brought Mr. Summers aboard as a trainer, he clearly didn't fit the FMRC mold. Matter a fact neither did his trainee's.

"No. You don't." Mr. Summers said as he handed her that day's Hologramatic Training Center schedule & yes, C Class was signed up for that time. B Class was signed up for the 11 am to 1 pm time slot.

"Well.. Well.. " Miss Brandiwyne sputtered. She did not like getting shown up in front of anyone, especially people she thought were below her. She put down the schedule & then left. Shortly there after B Class followed her out, one after another in single file.

Once they had left, James asked a question everyone was thinking "Did B Class look like they had been neutered to you or was that just me?" There were nods all around.

Mr. Summers knew what had happen to B Class & turned down the opportunity to do that to his group. He was told that he would have to eventually do that to them if he wished to remain an employee at the FMRC. That comment was partly the genesis for that day's training program. Another part was something he was already planning. From the looks of things there at the FMRC, the country & the world: it was looking that it was almost time to reveal his plan to his students & save them.
